Bel Air
Gated drives under eucalyptus and oak, and canyon views: Seabury Lane and Savona Road.
Living in Bel Air
Bel Air was founded in 1923 by Alphonzo Bell, whose Santa Fe Springs farmland had struck oil, on hillside land north of Sunset Boulevard. Landscape architect Mark Daniels drew the master plan, and Italian names such as Bellagio and Capello went on the streets. Two gates still mark the entrances on Sunset: the East Gate at Beverly Glen and the West Gate at Bellagio Way, across from UCLA.
The Bel-Air Country Club was incorporated in 1924, and the Hotel Bel-Air opened in 1946 in the Bell estate’s former planning office, built in 1927. Early houses came from architects including Gordon Kaufmann, Roland Coate and John Byers. Roads wind up Stone Canyon, Roscomare Road and Beverly Glen toward Mulholland, through hills a brush fire swept on November 6, 1961.
