Brentwood
Large lots on Bristol and Tigertail, a Mid-Century house in Mandeville Canyon, and The Brentwood on San Vicente.
Living in Brentwood
Brentwood grew up outside the west gate of the old Soldiers’ Home — the settlement was first called Westgate — and joined the City of Los Angeles in 1916. Brentwood Park, laid out from 1906 north of San Vicente Boulevard, holds large lots, and San Vicente’s grass median, once a trolley line, is planted with coral trees that became a city Historic-Cultural Monument in 1976.
Brentwood Village, at Barrington Avenue and Sunset Boulevard, gathers restaurants and coffee shops within a couple of blocks. North of Sunset the land rises into Mandeville, Kenter and Sullivan canyons; in Crestwood Hills, above Kenter Canyon, a late-1940s cooperative built midcentury modern houses designed by A. Quincy Jones. The Getty Center, Richard Meier’s hilltop campus above the 405, opened in 1997.
