Cheviot Hills
Tree-lined streets, within walking distance of the golf course.
Living in Cheviot Hills
Cheviot Hills opened in 1923 as a Frans Nelson & Sons tract, its streets — Haddington, Bannockburn and the rest — named for roads in Scotland. The developer approved every house front and allowed only stucco, stone or brick. Monte Mar Vista followed from 1926, and in 1952 California Country Club Estates was built east of Motor Avenue on the grounds of a former country club.
Cheviot Hills Park, created by the city in 1945, holds a recreation center, a pool, lighted tennis courts and an archery range beside the public Rancho Park Golf Course, designed by William P. Bell and William H. Johnson and opened in 1947. The course hosted the Los Angeles Open between 1956 and 1983, and a plaque on its 18th hole recalls Arnold Palmer’s 12 there in 1961.
